The Prayerful Pause - April 22

What would it look like to love our neighbors intentionally this week? When Jesus spoke about loving our neighbors, he wasn’t pointing us toward something complicated. He was inviting us into a way of life where we simply seek to love those we encounter daily. Here are a few important markers of that type of love for us to prayerfully consider.

Love begins with noticing. This week, let’s start by paying attention to the people around us: family, coworkers, the cashier at the store, or neighbors on the street. Who looks tired? Who seems overwhelmed? Who might need encouragement?  Loving our neighbors starts when we slow down enough to truly see one another.

Love shows up through simple kindness. Here are a few easy ways we can offer kindness to others. Consider writing a quick note of encouragement and dropping it in the mail, or sending a text to someone who comes to mind to let them know you’re thinking of them. Try holding the door, offering a smile, or learning someone’s name and story. These small acts may seem ordinary, but they carry extraordinary grace.

Love listens before it speaks. In a world full of noise, offering others our attention speaks volumes. Asking someone how they’re really doing, and taking the time to listen, is a powerful way to love them.  You don’t have to fix anything. The ministry of your presence is much more powerful than words.

Love lends a hand. Helping hands speak powerfully of God’s love, so here are just a few ideas to get us thinking. Help pick up groceries for a neighbor. Help a friend with a task they’ve been putting off. Volunteer an hour of your time to serve someone in need. Love becomes visible when we step in to help carry one another’s burdens.

Love chooses grace. Grace reminds us that we have received God’s love. We can reflect God's love well when we choose to extend grace to those around us. We can practice patience when someone is difficult. We can choose to forgive when it would be easier to hold a grudge. Let’s speak kindly, even when tensions are high. Choosing grace is a way of life that points to Christ’s love for all people.

Most importantly, love points back to Christ. Every act of kindness, every word of encouragement, every moment of compassion reflects the love we have first received from Jesus. We don’t love our neighbors to earn God’s favor; we love because God has already loved us so deeply. Jesus is the source of our service and our love for our neighbors all around us.

So, this week, let’s start small. Let’s ask God to help us love at least one of the people he places in our path each day in a simple way. We may never fully see the impact, but God will use it in ways we cannot begin to imagine.  Because when we love our neighbors in simple, faithful ways, we become part of the story God is telling in the world.

Jesus loves you, Union Family, and I do too!
