“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus invited people to follow him. He called fishermen to leave their nets. He called Peter to step out of the boat. He called the weary to trust him and the disappointed to keep hoping. Jesus met people where they were, but he never left them there. Yes, Jesus called them to move, and that is the invitation at the heart of our August sermon series, Faith That Moves. This month in worship, we will journey alongside Jesus and his disciples, learning what it means to let our faith move us.
Sometimes faith moves by trusting Jesus when we cannot see what lies ahead. Other times faith moves by stepping beyond what feels safe and familiar. Still other times, faith moves by persisting in hope. When prayers seem unanswered and circumstances remain unchanged, faith helps us continue praying and trusting that God is working even when we cannot see it.
Faith also moves as we seek to follow Jesus more closely. Jesus desires our whole hearts, our priorities, relationships, decisions, gifts, and plans for the future. The disciples followed Jesus while carrying questions, doubts, and fears. They did not understand everything before they began. They simply trusted Jesus enough to take the next step.
The same is true for us all these years later. Faithfulness usually begins with one simple act of obedience: making the call, offering the apology, showing up to serve, praying again, or saying, “Jesus, I will follow where you lead.”
Union Family, this week, let’s prayerfully consider where Jesus may be inviting us to move from belief to action. May we listen for his leading, trust his guidance, and seek to take the next faithful step, knowing that our faith was not meant to remain still for long.
